Often when we help a child or a family, they become part of our “family”, who we have ongoing relationships with that include attending functions, supporting education, helping with housing, and sometimes even extends to medical care.
Many years ago, people came together to help Shantama, a widow from the SC, the lowest caste in Indian society, build a house to shelter her family and keep them safe. Since then, the four girls have attended summer camp and after school classes. This year, the oldest daughter helped with summer camp, and with funding raised by Natalie Heuter, she is attending college.
Annapurna, the second of four girls, lost two front teeth in a bicycle accident. Shobha Ks has helped Shantama take her to the medical clinic and two dental hospitals. The cost of dental care to replace her front teeth is $425. Shantama asked to borrow money so that her daughter can get the dental work she needs. Shantamma’s annual salary is roughly $450 (3000 rupees, about $38/month). While I appreciate that she is willing to sacrifice from her very limited salary to help her daughter, I would instead like to raise the $425 to pay for Annapurna’s dental work.
